Warning signs of a sick building - Part 2

Indoor air quality is of vital importance to health and wellbeing because people spend 80–90% of their time inside. Daily, people inhale 10m3 of air, which is chock-full of microorganisms in the form of bio-aerosols. In addition to fungi (or mould), which are considered the main source of allergy, bacteria are also present everywhere - even in ulra hygenic environments such as operating rooms. According to research, 30% of office workers suffer from health problems due to poor indoor air quality. Water damage during construction can make new homes disastrously contaminated, resulting in a variety of unwanted and unexpected health problems. Allergic reactions, infections, and mycotoxin-driven molecular reactions leading to inflammation and non-specific illness can result from contact with these contaminants. Indoor allergy symptoms such as headache and chronic allergies may be the cause if you feel unwell after spending time inside your home. For example, asthma is associated with damp buildings. Moulds, which are present in damp buildings, may increase the risk of developing bronchial asthma in addition to causing asthma-related symptoms, according to a recent study in Int J Environ Res Public Health, Find it here: doi: 10.3390/ijerph191811338.

Residential Exposure to Dampness Is Related to Reduced Level of Asthma Control among Adults

This study shows that indoor dampness and water damage in homes decreases the asthma control of adults with asthma. In addition to decreased asthma control, men were particularly vulnerable. Advice on how to prevent indoor dampness in the home should be included as an important component of asthma care for adults. Any water damage or dampness detected should be remedied rapidly when detected.  If your home has been water damaged, insist on professional cleanup and mould remediation.  Speak up and demand change.
